Parker W. Borg (born May 25, 1939, in
Minneapolis, Minnesota ) Ambassador Parker W. Borg served for more than thirty-five years in the American Foreign Service. He was nominated by three separate Presidents for Ambassadorial positions and held senior jobs at the State Department in the areas of counter-terrorism, narcotics suppression, the international dimensions of information technology, and African Affairs. He was nominated as American Ambassador to Mali, Burma, and Iceland, but never went to Burma because of Senate objection to Burma’s human rights problems. Other overseas assignments included embassy assignments in the Congo and Malaysia and as a civilian advisor in Vietnam during the war. He began his government career as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines.While pursuing his diplomatic career, Ambassador Borg also served one year as the State Department fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and as a Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Policy in Washington. He has a Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and a Master’s degree from Cornell University.
Ambassador Borg has been serving as diplomat-in-residence at AUR since the fall of 2005. In addition, he is a Senior Fellow with the Center for International Policy in Washington and a representative in Italy of the Caux Round Table on business ethics.
In the period from 2005 to 2008 , Ambassador Borg taught two classes at the American University of Rome, Comparative Foreign Polices and Current American Foreign Policy, which were rated by students in the IR department as the most popular and useful for future International Relations professionals. Generally dismissive of theory, Ambassador Borg gave to these classes a rich practical and human dimension drawn from his lifelong experience as a diplomat. Students, faculty and staff at AUR widely regarded Ambassador Borg as possessing a keen intellect and a pleasant demeanor.
Ambassador Borg is married to Anna M. Borg, ex Deputy Chief of Mission at the American Embassy in Rome. They are the parents of three daughters.
