Atlanta is a city in Cass County, Texas, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,745. It was named after Atlanta, Georgia.

Geography

Atlanta is located at coor dms|33|7|6|N|94|9|60|W|city (33.118228, -94.166537).GR|1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.1 square miles (28.7 km²), of which, 10.9 square miles (28.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (1.17%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 5,745 people, 2,254 households, and 1,571 families residing in the city. The population density was 525.4 people per square mile (202.9/km²). There were 2,556 housing units at an average density of 233.8/sq mi (90.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 68.13% White, 29.23% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.72% of the population.

There were 2,254 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were married couples living together, 18.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,188, and the median income for a family was $32,679. Males had a median income of $29,286 versus $19,715 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,013. About 19.0% of families and 23.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.4% of those under age 18 and 19.4% of those age 65 or over.

The City of Atlanta is served by the Atlanta Independent School District.

*Bessie Coleman, the world's first female African-American licensed aviator, was born here.

*Ellen DeGeneres, the TV talk show host and comedian. Shortly after her parents divorced in January 1974, she and her mother moved to Atlanta from New Orleans. She graduated from Atlanta High School in 1976. DeGeneres hosted the 79th Academy Awards on February 25, 2007.

*Tracy Lawrence, a country musician, was born in Atlanta. He was raised in Foreman, Arkansas.

*Ted Thompson, general manager of the Green Bay Packers, was born and raised here, graduating from Atlanta High School in 1971. He has been a part of the NFL for 25 years, including 10 years as a player for the Houston Oilers.

*Kevin Rahm, actor and regular on "Judging Amy" and "Desperate Housewives", graduated from Atlanta High School in 1989.

*Derrick Blaylock was drafted into the NFL in 2001 by the Kansas City Chiefs as a running back. He was a running back for Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks from 1997-2000 and is currently with the Washington Redskins. Blaylock graduated from Atlanta High School in 1997.

*((Nancy Thompson)) The first female high school football player in the state of Texas; Oddly enough her soon to be husband was the first male chearleader in the state of Texas. Both were Atlanta High graduates.
