Brief History

It was Founded in 1955 by Atty. Rodolfo N. Pelaez and Mrs. Elsa P. Peleaz. It's first course offering was the college of Law. After Atty. Pelaez' death his wife Elsa took over the school and it created the College of Nursing (formerly Midwifery). Before 1980's the College of Arts and Science was created and the Basic Education Department in 1981. Mrs. Pelaez was Succeeded by Dr. Jose Ma. R. Golez who was the president from 1975 to 2003. On 1998 it gained its University Status and elevated to level III by Commission on Higher Education and on 2003 Dr. Rafaelita P. Golez became the president of the institution. Track Record

During her first 25 years , the Liceo de Cagayan University was exclusively a tertiary-level institution offering courses in law, commerce, engineering and liberal arts. It was not until 1981 when the Basic Education Department, consisting of the primary and secondary levels, completed the three curricular levels that the University is currently offering.

The Liceo University pioneered in the offering of such courses as Nursing (both baccalaureate and graduate degrees), Physical Therapy, Radiologic Technology, Computer Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Tourism, and Computer Information Systems in Cagayan de Oro. Graduates of these courses have positioned themselves in filling the manpower requirements in these areas to support both developed and developing economics. In 1998, the University became the first in the country to offer a graduate program, the Diploma/Master of Local Governance Scholarship Program funded by the Canadian government and the Civil Service Commission. Moreover, innovative programs in Management, including Engineering, Environmental and Human Resource Management in both graduate and post-graduate levels have made it possible for the local executives and managers in business, academe, and government to update and upgrade themselves in their individual attempts to contribute towards the achievement of greater productivity, attainment of professional growth, and enjoyment of a heightened sense of self-fulfillment. With the advent of the age of computer technology, the University blazed the trail among local schools in offering Information Technology courses. In state-of-the-art laboratories, Liceans get connected to the global networks of information by surfing the information superhighway.

With seven curricular offerings already accredited and other departments due to undergo accreditation, Liceo University is the only school in the city with that much number of accredited programs.

As a clinical science, physical therapy is a process of continuous evolution. The explosion in technology and knowledge in physical therapy itself is like a new clinical practice being undertaken, where relevant findings from scientific and clinical investigations are overwhelming. We are entering a period in which health science curricula worldwide are undergoing dramatic transformations and experiencing significant structural changes which are likely to shape the practice of physical therapy for decades.

New theoretical perspectives and data-based findings are providing considerable challenges that require rethinking of the traditional methods of practice and the ability to function with the flexibility needed to keep abreast of such new developments. Moreover, physical-therapy service provisions have been extended from a medically based institution to a variety of community, educational and social service agencies, as well as a private practice.
