Allen Jack+Cottier

Allen Jack+Cottier

Allen Jack+Cottier Architects is a leading architectural firm based in Sydney, Australia.

The firm was established in 1952 when John Allen began operating as a sole practitioner in Sydney, designing alterations and additions to existing houses until the first first full project in 1953. The project was the design of a new house in Vancouver Street at Red Hill, Australian Capital Territory.

In 1956 John Allen formed a partnership with his university friend Russell Jack and the architectural firm was named John Allen & Russell C Jack. Over the years the firm had developed distinct methods of approaching the design of a building, which included maximising thermal performance and ventilation of a building and a philosophy that reflected the modernist movement.Keith Cottier’s contribution to ‘Clubbe Hall’ (a multi-purpose performance centre) for Frensham School in Mittagong in 1964 had gained Allen and Jack’s attention and established that Keith Cottier as an architect of talent and potential, was later promoted to partner that year, and the firm was renamed Allen Jack+Cottier.
