Universiti Putra Malaysia Students Representative Council is a students' union in Universiti Putra Malaysia which is responsible for students welfare and activity organizing aimed at enhancing ‘softskills’ among students to produce reputable graduates in various sectors of the country and internationally. The Students Representative Council is known as “MPPUPM” or “Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar Universiti Putra Malaysia” in Bahasa Melayu and exists as the main voice and medium of communication between students and the university authorities.

Membership

All undergraduate students are automatically members of the Universiti Putra Malaysia Students Representative Council and is eligible to vote their representatives every year.

election Process

Universiti Putra Malaysia Students Representative Council members are referred to as “Exco” and have different functions and responsibility under their appointed portfolio. The 48 Exco Members are elected every year by the undergraduate students in Universiti Putra Malaysia through a process known as “Students Representative Council Selection”. The candidates would contest as a representative for the faculty or open seats. Successful candidates would then be appointed as members of the Student Representative Council and their portfolio determined in an electoral meeting among them.

Organizational Structure

The structure of Students Representative Council changes every year as determined by the President after the selection process but as of the 2007/2008 session, there are 6 main divisions which have specific functions and purposes which complements the “MPP Strategic Plan” as a whole. The divisions below are headed by a Deputy President (except The Higher Council) and are responsible for the implementation of the Strategic Plan:

In order to serve the functional purpose of each Division, Secretariats are established under each Division. Currently, there are 10 Secretariats in total and is headed by an appointed Chairman. The Secretariat are:

* Academic, Career and Entrepreneurship Secretariat

* Unity and Human Development Secretariat

* Cultural, Sports and Recreation Secretariat

* Safety and Welfare Secretariat

* Volunteerism, Community and Alumni Secretariat

* ICT and Multimedia Secretariat

* Corporate Communication and Diplomatic Affairs Secretariat

* International and Off Campus Students Secretariat

* Research and Leadership Secretariat

* Strategic Management, Archives and Special Affairs Secretariat

MPP Strategic Plan

The current cabinet members for the 2007/2008 session have agreed on an establishment of a strategic plan which would be implemented during the session. The organizational structure reflects the strategic plan from the division’s segregation and activities are organized based on the strategic plan. The Key Performance Indicators for each component in the strategic plan is updated monthly in the Higher Council Meeting.

The contents of the Strategic Plan are as below:The Students Representative Council for the 2007/2008 session establish the MPP Strategic Plan based on the UPM Strategic Plan (2001-2010) in which “students welfare” is a given priority in producing excellent students to uphold an exemplary positive image of the university domestically and internationally.

“Students Welfare” in this plan refers to infrastructure and amenities, character development and enhancing ties between the community and the students. The four main components are as below:

Organize programs which would produce graduates with excellent characteristics, competitive and practice lifelong learning.

Enhance entrepreneurship skills before graduation.

Increase cooperation in sports and cultural activities.

Increase spiritual awareness among students as the main component in producing reputable graduates.

Organize activities which are focused on unity issues.

Enhance Ties Between The Students and Community

Priority towards students’ welfare and safety to create a harmonious environment.

Organize Volunteerism Activities to open up new opportunities for students to contribute to the society.

Enhance contribution by the society and alumni in student activities.

Effective Communication

Form cooperation with other Student Representative Councils, private and public institutions and the industry to open up new opportunities for students.

Increase activities with off campus students.

Create an effective ICT medium to effectively pass information to students.

Create a Research Culture and Effective Management

Propose case studies on previous events and activities as a source for community development.

Incorporate research studies as the main tool to voice out on student welfare issues.

Draft an effective management technique to increase the efficiency of the Students Representative Council.

To practice excellent leadership and management skills among students.

Activities

The Students Representative Council actively participates in all events throughout Malaysia in collaboration events and as guests. Welfare activities are an ongoing basis as the Welfare and Safety Secretariat would be in meetings and discussions every week to resolve any occurring welfare issues.
