German submarine U-455

German submarine U-455

Unterseeboot 455, or U-455, was a German U-Boat serving during World War II, lost at sea on April 6th, 1944.

U-455 was first launched on August 21st, 1941, under the command of Hans-Henrich Giessler, and later commanded by Hans-Martin Scheibe. With a crew of 51, U-455 undertook 10 patrols, sinking 3 ships. On October 4th, 1943, while refueling along with U-264, U-422 and U-460, the U-Boats came under attack from allied TBF Avengers. The U-Boats fired flak at the aircraft, then submerged. U-460 was the last to submerge, and was sank while making the attempt.

On April 6th, 1944, while on patrol in the Mediterranean Sea, U-455 was lost with all hands. No explanantion exists for its loss, but it is believed that she possibly struck a German mine. However, there is no confirmation to that. Her last transmission was on April 2nd, 1944, four days prior to her disappearance, when she radioed in while on patrol off the coast of Algiers.
