Bethel Township is a township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,421 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 5.7 square miles (14.7 km²), all of it land.

All Bethel Township residents who reside in Boothwyn (19061 ZIP code) now live in Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania 19061. The USPS has changed the "Marcus Hook" name for those residents, and they will no longer be identified as "Marcus Hook" by the global postal database. Bethel and neighboring Concord townships will share a post office, and Garnet Valley will have its own ZIP code in the next few years. The town gets its name from its school district, Garnet Valley School District, in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 6,421 people, 1,984 households, and 1,732 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,132.3 people per square mile (437.2/km²). There were 2,017 housing units at an average density of 355.7/sq mi (137.3/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 94.44% White, 2.18% African American, 0.03% Native American, 2.41% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.93% of the population.

There were 1,984 households out of which 50.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 78.3% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 12.7% were non-families. 9.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.16 and the average family size was 3.40.

In the township the population was spread out with 31.5% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 34.7% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.7 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $84,661, and the median income for a family was $87,248. Males had a median income of $60,496 versus $36,272 for females. The per capita income for the township was $29,349. About 1.0% of families and 2.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.4% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over.
