Bachelors in Design

Foundation Course

The Foundation Course allows students to build the base for learning Art and Design. The focus is on developing the fundamental skills & understanding through Life Drawing, Colour, Basic Design, Art Appreciation & Aesthetics, Method & Materials, Workshop and Art History.

The Foundation Course combines a studio curriculum with core studies in liberal arts, History with a traditional and cultural perspective. Students will acquire the basic skills and language necessary to succeed in any discipline. In essence, the Foundation Course serves as the platform to lifelong learning.

The goal of all students, naturally, is to work in their chosen major. At most Art Colleges, new students begin their major with no foundation. This fast track can ultimately waste time, energy, and money if a wrong choice is made in haste. Apeejay Graduates, on the other hand, say that they value the time they spend in Foundation studies, getting to know themselves and their potential before setting on one of the majors. Foundation equips students with a visual vocabulary. Faculty and students discuss the concepts and test the process of drawing, design, and painting all of which are used by all art students, no matter what their major is. Courses in art history and liberal art round up the basic art education and place it in a relevant context. Students begin to see themselves as competent individuals.

Fashion Design

Fashion is an exploration into the images people wish to convey about themselves and the way they live. The Fashion Design Programme at Apeejay helps students garner the technical skills they need for successful careers in the fashion industry in a highly professional environment, learning from some of the best designers in the country.

The curriculum for Fashion Design is structured around the same schedule as the industry, allowing students to learn quickly how to manage their time, a must for the professional designer. For example students must begin their work on the next season while finishing up the current and, the same time, begin thinking about the following season.

The first year is devoted to fashion design fundamentals - the language and skills of the industry. Students study and practice pattern making, draping, fabric and colour co-ordination, sewing and construction, model drawing, and fashion illustration.

The focus in the coming years is on tailoring and fine dress making, including better sportswear, dresses and evening garments. Students in the department also have the option to work in menswear and institutional garments, children or ladies wear.

Textile Design

India has one of the most ancient traditions of designing and making fabrics. Each corner of India displays its own combination of weaves and prints, and when put together on display, we have the most astonishing collection of diverse fabrics. From the traditional to the modern, today India has a substantial export of fabrics all around the world not only in the form of textiles and garments but in the form of textile based handicrafts as well.

The course is structured to take the student through the process of designing Woven as well as Printed fabrics, keeping in mind the end product and utility space for which it is being designed. Apart from understanding the needs of the creative markets both in India and abroad and providing creative visual design education, exploring colour imagery and surface pattern through a wide range of processes, the curriculum invites students to express their creativity and acquire technical skills to excel in the field.

Graphic Design

The curriculum progressively introduces students to the essentials of painting and drawing typography, print making, conceptualising and lay-outing of press and magazine advertisements etc., with a timeless knowledge of the designers role in business and industry.

Graphic thinking is essential to this approach. Students learn to interpret and translate a clients brief into a design that informs, attracts and achieves its objective. The department is committed to preparing students creatively, intellectually and

technically to meet the demands of dynamic array of visual communication professions. Courses are developed and taught by a competent and connected staff of industry professionals who strive to achieve the critical balance between theory and practice, meaning and making.

Graphic Design graduates work in advertising, marketing, book and newspaper publishing, package design, exhibit design, television and films.

Interior Design

Architecture and design fundamentals, rather than mere decor, are the driving forces behind Apeejay's Interior Design program. Interior design students learn through their active input in design & construction studios, workshop and theoretical aspects oriented towards a clear view of the contemporary Interior Design Industry. Many of the design problems selected for their projects are actual projects offered by practicing design firms.

Each year, students get training in areas like Design, Methods and Material, Providing Services, History and technical theory. The specific content of the course changes over during the programme, from an emphasis on craft formalism and a holistic understanding of various aspects of interiors in the beginning semesters to emphasis on cultural criticism and professional practice in the concluding semesters.

The faculty continually emphasizes on learning to co-ordinate as a team as well as importance of an independent approach so that the students develop as mature design professionals.
