Saint Lucia Labour Party

The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) is a social democratic political party in Saint Lucia.

In the elections held on 11 December 2006, the SLP won only 6 of the 17 seats and consequently lost power to the UWP.

At the previous legislative elections, 3 December 2001, the party won 54.2 % of popular votes and 14 out of 17 seats. Kenny Anthony was confirmed as prime minister.

The party was founded in 1950 by George Charles and others. It had a majority in the Saint Lucia assembly from 1951 to 1964. It then lost the elections and went into opposition, until 1979. It then had control of the government from 1979 to 1982, when it again lost elections. It was then in opposition until 1997, when it won elections, and was the governing party from 1997 to 2006. The party has a moderate socialist ideology.

The SLP is a consultative member of the Socialist International. [ [http://www.socialistinternational.org/viewArticle.cfm?ArticlePageID=931 List of member parties of the Socialist International] .]
