Austrian legislative election, 1995

Austrian legislative election, 1995

The elections to the Austrian National Council taking place in fall of 1995 were the first to follow Austria's accession to the EU and followed only a year after the 1994 elections. The coalition government headed by Franz Vranitzky between the SPÖ and the ÖVP broke down after disagreements on the government budget for the next year. It was also the first election where the ÖVP was headed by Wolfgang Schüssel.

After the election, the SPÖ-ÖVP coalition was renewed. The outcome yielded a two-thirds majority for the coalition, which it had lost in 1994, again allowing it to pass amendments to the constitution.
