Moez Masoud

Moez Masoud is an Egyptian host of television and radio shows about Islam in both English and Arabic.

He grew up speaking English and colloquial Arabic. His family was not particularly religious, and he attended American schools while growing up in Egypt and Kuwait.^[1]

While he was at university, a number of his friends were killed, and he had his own brush with death involving a tumor. While dealing with his illness, he made a deal with God: "Let me survive this and I will dedicate my life to you."

He began studying formal Arabic, and the Qur'an, and attending mosque; which troubled his mother at first as she worried that he might be influenced by extremists. He came to believe that the most faithful interpretation of the Qur'an lay in between the watered down Islam of his youth, and the extremest interpretations gaining notoriety in the 1990s.

During his studies, he found that he had memorized the Qur'an with out specifically intending to, and began to become popular as a discussion group leader. This led to his first Islam related show; the English language Parables in the Qur'an. His most recent program is the Arabic language The Right Way, which premiered during Ramadan 2007.

At The Search for Mutual Understanding (a 2006 conference) he gave a speech titled "The True Message of Islam" (available on YouTube).

He is now working on getting his Masters degree from the Faculty of Divinity, Cambridge University.

In 2011 after the 2011 Egyptian Revolution he was described as one of a new breed of Muslim televangelists who are becoming true American-style celebrities.^[2]
