"My French Coach" (known as "My French Coach Level 1: Beginners" in Europe and Australia) for the Nintendo DS and Wii is one of several games in the "My Coach" series, published by Ubisoft. The game teaches French through a series of lessons and games.

Gameplay

Players begin by starting a lesson, which introduces 10 new words, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. The lessons contain spoken translations of the words as well as games. When the lesson is completed, the player must go to the game section, a collection of activities such as Multiple Choice, Hit-A-Word, Word Find, Flash Cards, Memory, Bridge Builder, and Spelltastic. The player must accrue enough points by playing these games to "master" the 10 words. Once all the words are mastered, the next lesson is unlocked and the process repeats itself.

Reception

The reviews for this game are mostly positive in terms of critics and fans alike. The game was praised by IGN for its "fast and fun learning experience". However, IGN criticized for lacking a lesson in learning past and future tenses, and its repetitive music.

Nintendo World Power gave this game a high score, stating that it works well with any French student and its lessons are "short, brisk, and useful". But, they pointed out that the "mini-games are just average", and unlocking new ones takes a very long time.

Appearances in Popular Culture

The webcomic Penny Arcade, which covers many aspects of video gaming, once had a strip in which one character was playing the game in a very competitive manner, attempting to "level up" in nouns. [ citeweb|url=http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/5/12/|title=May 12, 2008 "Penny Arcade"]
