Zeke Zekley

Zeke Zekley

Zeke Zekley (February 11 1915 – April 28 2005) was an American cartoonist.

Zekley was born in Chicago and grew up in Detroit. His first work as a cartoonist was at age 18 for the "Detroit Mirror". He moved to California to work for Disney, but was quickly laid off.

In 1935, a chance encounter with the brother of George McManus got him hired as his assistant on "Bringing Up Father", one of the most popular comic strips of the day. He worked for McManus for two decades and upon McManus' death in 1954, it was expected that Zekley would take over for him. Instead, King Features Syndicate replaced McManus with Vernon Greene.

Zekley worked on other comic strips - "Dud Dudley", "Paps Younger", "Peachy Keen", and "Popsie" - but none of them were particularly successful. Zekley is thought to have worked on the comic book "First Love" for Harvey Comics.

Zekley started his own company called Sponsored Comics which created promotional comic books for businesses. He also worked on "PS Magazine", a US Army publication created by Will Eisner.
