John Bel Edwards is a Democratic member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, representing the 72nd District since 2008.

Edwards was raised in Amite, Louisiana, the Son of Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff and Edwin Edwards confidant Frank Edwards Jr. Edwards graduated from Amite Highschool as Valedvictorian, and received a bachelors degree in engineering from Westpoint in Westpoint, New York in 1988. Edwards then returned to Louisiana to receive a law degree from Louisiana State University in 1999. He is a practicing attorney with the Edwards and Associates law firm.

Edwards faced tough criticism from the local NAACP President as she thought since House District 72 was a minority district that the district would best be represented by an African American.

Edwards campaigned and was forced into a run-off with fellow trial lawyer George Tucker. Tucker campaigned primarily on the fact that he defended a Jena six member. Edwards was overwhelmingly elected and won every parish in his district.

Major cites/towns that edwards represent include: Amite City, Louisiana, Greensburg, Louisiana, Kentwood, Louisiana, and parts of St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Hammond, Louisiana.
