Shotokan Karate Association

Shotokan Karate Association

The Shotokan Karate Association (SKA) was founded in Bucks County, PA, by William Hodgkiss in 1968. The organization is one of the oldest traditional Japanese karate-do organizations in the United States as well as one of the largest Shotokan organizations led by a non-Japanese director. The eighteen member clubs, located in Pennsylvania and Maryland, are all led by 1st, 2nd, or 3rd generation students of William Hodgkiss and Assistant Director Al Shea (now retired).

Governed by a five-member Board of Directors, the Shotokan Karate Association has managed to avoid many of the political entanglements and control issues that have led to the break up of most karate organizations of its size or tenure. The organization estimates its current membership at over 1,000 active students and senior members.
