Bersagel, a city-state|Greeley|Colorado native who attended Greeley Central High School,cite web|url=http://www.greeleytrib.com/article/20060707/SPORTS/107070078|title=Runner goes the distance|accessdate=2008-01-27|publisher=Greeley Publishing Co.|work=greeleytrib.com|date=2006-07-06|author=Fernandez, Bobby] is a three-time All-American in cross country, a two-time Academic All-American, a two-time Wake Forest University scholar-athlete of the year, five-time track & field All-American, a two-time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) champion in the outdoor 10,000 meters, and was the 2005 ACC champion in the indoor 5000 meters.

After graduating with honors as an economics and politics double major in December 2005, she continued to train for with Team USA Minnesota based in city-state|Minneapolis-St. Paul|Minnesota. She joined Team USA immediately after graduating. She also placed 10th in the 2006 USA Cross Country Championships 8 km. However, in May 2007 she left the training group to complete her master's degree in peace and conflict instead of returning to the University of Minnesota to complete her degree. Bersagel has interned at the U.S. Embassy in city-state|Oslo|Norway and has a goal of becoming the U.S. Secretary of State where she can enrich the lives of others. She has also been awarded a NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

Although she had hoped to appear in the Olympic Track & Field Trials that were held June 27–July 6 2008 in city-state|Eugene|Oregon, she did not.
