HMS Reindeer (1804)

HMS Reindeer (1804)

HMS "Reindeer" was an 18-gun sloop-of-war of the Royal Navy, and was launched in 1804. Technically, she was a "brig-sloop", having only two masts whereas ship-sloops had a ship (three masted) rig. She was one of the numerous "Cruizer" class brig-sloops built during this war.

On 1814-06-29 HMS "Reindeer" encountered the American sloop USS "Wasp" commanded by Johnston Blakely about 500 miles west of Ushant. In the resulting action the "Reindeer" was wrecked by cannon fire, 25 of her crew being killed including her commander and 42 out of a total of 98 men and 20 boys and she was forced to surrender.

The following day Blakely decided "Reindeer" was too badly damaged and set her afire.
