customcommons=Highway 52 is a former provincial highway located in the former Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth, now the City of Hamilton. This road had a very interesting history, and one of the strangest routings of any provincially-controlled highway.
History
The road originally travelled from Highway 8 in Rockton north along at least "five" different township roads in just 13 km (8 miles), and ended at a local township road at the Wellington/Wentworth County Line. To add to the odd routing, upon being extended, one quarter of its route was
multiplex ed with Highway 8 (where it terminated at the intersection of Highways 5 and 8 in Peter's Corners). This odd section was the first part of Highway 52 to gain the highway designation of Highway 52.Later in 1937, the Department of Highways (now today's Ministry of Transportation) had assumed control of 10 km more of local roads south of Highway 8/Highway 5. The road was extended south to Highway 2/53 on Wilson Street in
Ancaster, Ontario . This added a 7 km multiplex with Highway 8, a full quarter of Highway 52's entire length. The road was paved between Highways 2 and 97 in1955 , with the remainder being paved three years later. The original section of Highway 52 (the parts north of the Highway 5 and 8 intersection) was downloaded to the Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth. The road's length was reduced to 10.5 km. On
January 1 ,1998 , the rest of Highway 52 was downloaded to the former Region of Hamilton-Wentworth (now City of Hamilton). The road has not been given a new numerical designation, and is simply known as Westover Road and Trinity Road.See also
