Schillaci (horse)

Schillaci (horse)

Schillaci was a champion Australian thoroughbred racehorse. A grey son of Salieri from the Biscay mare Biscarina, he was trained throughout his career by Lee Freedman.

The horse was a $70,000 purchase at the 1990 yearling sales and named after Italian World Cup soccer hero Salvatore Schillaci.

Given time to develop he did not race until his three-year old season. Such was the horses ability he became a triple Group One winner at only his sixth race start.

Those three wins included the 1992 VRC Lightning Stakes, Newmarket Handicap and the VATC Oakleigh Plate in the same year, a feat that had only been achieved once before – by Placid Ark in 1987.

His explosive speed yielded other major race victories including the 1992 AJC The Galaxy, 1993 STC George Ryder Stakes and the 1993 and 1995 VATC Futurity Stakes.

Schillaci was retired to a property near Seymour in Victoria.
