East Greenwich Township is a township in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 5,430.

East Greenwich Township was created by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 10, 1881, from the eastern part of Greenwich Township and the western part of Mantua Township."The Story of New Jersey's Civil Boundaries: 1606-1968", John P. East Greenwich includes the unincorporated communities of Clarksboro, Mickleton and Mount Royal.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 15.0 square miles (38.8 km²), of which, 14.8 square miles (38.2 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it (1.47%) is water.

East Greenwich Township borders Greenwich Township, Paulsboro, West Deptford Township, Mantua Township, Harrison Township, and Woolwich Township.

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 5,430 people, 1,901 households, and 1,515 families residing in the township. The population density was 368.1 people per square mile (142.1/km²). There were 1,971 housing units at an average density of 133.6/sq mi (51.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 94.68% White, 3.26% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.24% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.40% of the population.

There were 1,901 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.9% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% were non-families. 17.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the township the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $65,701, and the median income for a family was $74,455. Males had a median income of $51,662 versus $31,619 for females. The per capita income for the township was $25,345. About 2.6% of families and 3.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.0% of those age 65 or over.

Local government

East Greenwich Township is governed under the Township form of government with a five-member Township Committee. The Township Committee is elected directly by the voters in partisan elections to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with one or two seats coming up for election each year."2005 New Jersey Legislative District Data Book", Rutgers University Edward J.
