Cofinal (music)

Cofinal (music)

In the church modes of Gregorian chant a cofinal ("cofinalis" or "affinalis") is an alternative final or tonic. Typical a mode would end on either d, e, f, or g, while those ending on a, b, or c' used the cofinal. (Hoppin 1978, p.66)
