The Eastside Sun, one of two newspapers serving Kirkland, Washington, United States, is the largest monthly newspaper in the City of Kirkland, Washington. Since 2006, the Sun has evolved from a strictly nightlife and entertainment oriented newspaper to a well-rounded publication dealing with arts, government, entertainment, police abuses, transportation and growth management. The Eastside Sun originated as the brainchild of a group of downtown Kirkland businesspeople spearheaded by John Michal Gillday as a 32-page newspaper in July 2006 with a circulation of 10,000. Initially written off as an advertising vehicle, The Eastside Sun soon gained recognition as a potent force. Growth to 64 pages and full color, the Sun has managed to create a dialog as well as a divide in the community. Most merchants seem to support it - an observation based on its large advertising base - but there are continued letters to the editor in opposition to many of the newspaper's stances, referenced by a blog on the topic. Distribution

While The Sun is mainly distributed in the Kirkland / Redmond / Bellevue areas, it is making inroads into the Kent / Renton areas as well as the Northlake area comprising Kenmore, Bothell and Woodinville. One chain of local newspapers already in existence in these new areas have protested the incursion of The Sun.

Letters to the Editor

The centerpiece of this magazine has to be the letters to the editor page.

Most publications let letters stand on their own merits, but The Sun seems to like stirring up the pot by replying in a sarcastic and humorous vein. Even other publications have taken note of this 'outlaw' publication. City Council

Editor and Publisher John Michael Gilday has been proposed as a candidate for The Kirkland City Council. He has so far refused.

Note from Publisher

1) I have no interest in a city council position since it would present a serious conflict of satire.
2) If you write anything about anyone using our text or quoting from our newspaper, please include your name. We have a court order gagging us from comment on certain topics.
