McGee visits the NCIS building with a group of young boy scouts and Abby shows them around in her lab. When demonstrating AFIS using the fingerprint of Carson, one of the boys, the system unexpectedly shows a hit: Carson was reported to be abducted in 1998.

Abby and McGee decide to wait for Gibbs to decide what to do next and he decides that Carson has to stay with NCIS for now. They then visit his step-mother, Lt. Elaine Taylor, who is shocked to hear this but does not succeed in getting Carson back because she never legally adopted him, thus they have to find his father, who is a survival trainer and is currently teaching a class in the woods. They collect his personal items and Abby matches a fingerprint from his laptop to a nine-year-old cold case involving the murder of a shop clerk during a robbery by a Brian Matthews, thus they conclude Brian Taylor, Carson's father, to have been running from it (including changing his identity). Re-opening the cold case gets the Metro Police involved, which sends Detectives Collins and Hamilton to assist (and/or keep an eye on them).

McGee manages to find a clue on Brian's laptop that his wife, despite claiming not to, knew about his past but never confronted him. Tony and Ziva are sent out to search the forest for Brian while Jenny takes Carson home with her so he has not to stay with Child Services. Tony and Ziva manage to find a group of survival trainees but Taylor is missing because, as it is revealed, Carson managed to warn him that NCIS is looking for him. The team searches the woods with dogs and search teams but they only manage to locate his satellite phone and return back to NCIS empty-handed. They manage to track a single phone call to a man called Keenan but when they arrive at his house, he is dead, killed by a single knife thrust to the chest. The phone is off the hook and 911 is still on the phone asking for the reason he called. Abby manages to match the prints on the phone to Brian instead of Keenan when Brian calls. He specifically asks for Gibbs and tells him to come to talk to him and McGee manages to track him so the team sets out to find him.

Abby in the mean time finds a hair containing a chemical in the evidence of the cold case which can only be found in hair spray sold after 2002. As the robbery took place in 1998, she concludes that the evidence was rigged. Only the two Metro Police detectives working the case had access to it and the scene changes to Collins stopping Brian at gun-point. He admits setting him up and plans to kill him but the NCIS team manages to arrive in time and arrest him. It is revealed that Brian had been found by Gibbs first and he gave him his bulletproof vest and a recorder thus setting Collins up. The episode ends with Tony failing to beat Carson's movie trivia high score which (among many other things) proves to everyone but Tony that Carson is very much like Tony.

Notes

*This is the first episode to have the character of "Ziva" to use contractions such as "I'm", and "isn't".
*Director Shepard can be seen reading an article in the magazine "Stars and Stripes" about Lt. Col. Hollis Mann's retirement. The article states that she has retired on November 18 and relocated to the Hawaiian island of Lanai. Thus it is likely that she is retired as a recurring character as well.
