Saint Alberic of Utrecht (died 784) was a Benedictine monk [cite web | last =Gecik | first =J. F. | title =November 14 -- today's saints | date =2001-11-14 | url =http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=00727F | accessdate =2007-11-14] and bishop of Utrecht, in what is today the Netherlands.

Alberic was the nephew of Saint Gregory of Utrecht. Little is known of Alberic before he joined the Order of Saint Benedict.cite web | title =St. Alberic | work =Saints and Angels | publisher =Catholic Online | url =http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=1201 | accessdate =2007-11-14] It is known that he served as of the Cathedral of Saint Martin. When Gregory died in 775, Alberic succeeded his uncle as the bishop of Utrecht.Ref_label|A|a|none His bishopric was noted for the success of its mission among the pagan Teutons, cite web | last =Rabenstein | first =Katherine | title =Alberic of Utrecht, OSB B (AC) | work =Saints O' the Day for November 14 | month =March | year =1999 | url =http://www.saintpatrickdc.org/ss/1114.htm | accessdate =2007-11-14] as well as the reorganization of the school of Utrecht. In addition, Alberic directed the mission of Ludger in Ostergau.cite web | last = Jones | first = Terry | title = Alberic of Utrecht | work = Patron Saints Index | url=http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/sainta2v.htm | accessdate = 2007-11-14]

Alberic was a good friend of Alcuin, a teacher and poet from York, England, preeminent among the scholars of that era. This relationship likely speaks to Alberic's own intelligence, as the saint has been noted for his "encyclopedic knowledge of the faith."

Notes

  1. Note_label|A|a|noneAlthough sources state that Alberic succeeded his uncle to the see of Utrecht, Gregory was not a bishop, but in fact an "administrator," an abbot.ws|"" in the 1913 "Catholic Encyclopedia"] It is, however, certain that Alberic was a bishop, since he was consecrated at Cologne in 777.
