St. Charles is a village in Saginaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The village is located in the northwest corner of St. Charles Township with portions of the village located within Brant Township and Swan Creek Township. The population was 2,215 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.3 km²), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,215 people, 865 households, and 615 families residing in the village. The population density was 907.4 per square mile (350.5/km²). There were 909 housing units at an average density of 372.4/sq mi (143.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.57% White, 0.68% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.99% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.34% of the population.

There were 865 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 25.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $39,909, and the median income for a family was $45,804. Males had a median income of $38,750 versus $22,875 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,126. About 9.5% of families and 11.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.7% of those under age 18 and 8.5% of those age 65 or over.
