Phyletic order

Phyletic order

A phyletic order of a collection of taxa is an ordering of those taxa so that closely related taxa occur near each other. Since phyletic relatedness is not linear, phyletic ordering is not particularly sound, and little rigour is applied to it; but it is still useful in situations where the taxa must be presented in list form. For example, formal taxonomic arrangements always present taxa in phyletic order, rather than in alphabetical or arbitrary order.
