99 Precepts for Opening Hearts, Minds and Doors in the Muslim World

99 Precepts for Opening Hearts, Minds and Doors in the Muslim World is the name of a document written by journalist and author Asra Q. Nomani. On March 1, 2005, Nomani posted her "99 Precepts" on the door of Morgantown, West Virginia's Islamic Center [http://www.muslimwakeup.com/main/archives/2005/03/our_wittenberg.php photo] . The precepts call for, among other things, the full and equal participation of women within Islam.

History

The 99 Precepts for Opening Hearts, Minds and Doors in the Muslim World along with Islamic Bill of Rights for Women in the Mosque, and the Islamic Bill of Rights for Women in the Bedroom was written with the end of making Islam more progressive.

Nomani wrotes the 99 precepts in response to the conduct of fundamentalist leaders of her Muslim community who attempted to banish her for asserting her human rights as a Muslim woman and for standing up for a tolerant and inclusive Islam. They are modeled after the names and the essential messages of her book which treats her ordeals as a progressive female in the Muslim world, Standing Alone in Mecca.

Nomani insistst that the precepts are not for the "reform of Islam" but rather restoration of Islam.
