78th Scripps National Spelling Bee

The 78th Scripps National Spelling Bee was held June 1–2, 2005 in Washington D.C. 272 students competed.

Anurag Kashyap, 13, won the competition. He spelled the word "appoggiatura", a musical term, correctly. 11-year-old Samir Patel of Colleyville, Texas and Aliya Deri, 13, of Pleasanton, California tied for second place. Patel misspelled the word '. Deri misspelled the word '. Rajiv Tarigopula, a twelve-year-old seventh-grader from Sperreng Middle School in St. Louis, Missouri, misspelled "odylic" in Round 14, and was thereby eliminated, placing fourth. Elicia Chamberlin of Wilton, New Hampshire, and Marshall Winchester of Waxhaw, North Carolina, were eliminated in Round 11, thereby tying for fifth place. Chamberlin misspelled "rupicaprine", and Winchester misspelled "serang".
