(November 20 2003) "The Rough Guide to Rock", 3rd ed. revised. Rough Guides. ISBN=1843531054. pp 93–94.] The album includes the track "Rebel Girl", which song made #27 on the "Rolling Stone" list of "Most Excellent Songs Of Every Year Since 1967", a playlist assembled by the magazine in 2006 to celebrate its 1000th issue. Critical reception

In its review, Allmusic suggests that the album and its "even noisier follow-up, "Pussy Whipped", might be all the Bikini Kill one needs". [allmusicguide |id=10:fifixqwhldfe] Characterizing the compilation as " [a] ggressive, lippy, and none-too-disciplined", "Rough Guides" reviewer Owen James noted that it "nonetheless managed to sound like a triumph of female bonding against the odds". "Rolling Stone", which gave the compilation 4 stars, described it as "caustic, daring, and shamelessly didactic, a two-by-four to the chops of patriarchy".cite book |last=Brackett |first=Nathan |title=The New Rolling Stone Album Guide |edition= 4th ed. |year=2004 |publisher=Fireside |location=New York |isbn=0-7432-0169-8, p.72]
