Breakingviews.com, launched in 2000, is a website that provides daily financial commentary. The site publishes throughout the day every weekday on its website. Breakingviews distinguishes itself by the real-time nature of its commentary, and by always "making a call" on the company or issue in question.

Subscribers

Subscribers by default receive three emails per day, plus 3 weekly summary round ups via email. About half of the site's paid subscribers are "banking professionals" and the remainder are "fund managers, corporates, PRs or other professional services" including law firms and media firms. Most subscriptions are paid by employers (as opposed to individuals).

History

The site was founded in 1999 by Hugo Dixon, a former editor of the Financial Times' Lex column and launched its website in July 2000. In 2001, the site was the first online business journal to win a 'Harold Wincott award', and it was awarded a 'European Online Journalism award' for its coverage of "conflicts in investment banking and securities research".

In 2005, the site launched a US edition, led by founding editors Rob Cox and Edward Chancellor. On January 1, 2007 the Wall Street Journal syndicated the service for a daily column on the back page of the "Money and Investing" section and WSJ.com. In 2007, the board was expanded to include Claudio Costamagna, former Chairman of Goldman Sachs' investment banking business in Europe and Mervyn Davies, Chairman of Standard Chartered.

Dow Jones, the WSJ's current parent, is a minority investor in Breakingviews.

Partnerships

Breakingviews.com stories are also carried in several major newspapers. Since 2001, it has daily columns in NRC Handelsblad in the Netherlands, and L'Agefi in Switzerland. Since 2003, it has a column in Tijd, the leading financial newspaper in Belgium. Since 2005, it has a column in the Wall Street Journal's weekend edition (now daily).
