Prison Art Network

Prison Art Network

The Prison Arts Network (PAN) is an international information exchange for all those working with the arts in prisons and the criminal justice system. The Prison Arts Network is currently hosted on MSN Groups [http://groups.msn.com/PrisonArtsNetwork] and has over 170 members.

The Network evolved out of a series of meetings between people working in the arts in prisons supported by funding from the European Commission's Culture 2000 programme. PAN was established by the Centre for European Theatre in Prison (CETEC) [http://www.cetec-edge.com/Index1.htm] , an Italian company that also organised the first European meeting of prison drama practitioners in Milan in 1994.

A summary history of meetings of the Prison Arts Network, including links to the organiser's websites, is available here: [http://www.escapeartists.co.uk/images/pdfs/Prison%20Arts%20Network.pdf]

Prison Art Network, 2007-2009

2007 the EU commission did choose to sponsor a Network of the same name via the Grundtvig Actions. The network held a conference in Dublin in June 2007 in cooperation with the European Prison Education Association. The network focus on different fields of arts education in prison.

The PRISON ARTS EDUCATION NETWORK is a transnational Network of organisations involved in adult arts education for prison inmates and ex-offenders across Europe.

This initiative arose through discussions between the European Prison Education Association, an NGO of the Council of Europe focused on Prison Education, and the Comenius Big Picture Network, exploring post-16 non-advanced arts education, during which the need was identified for creating a specific European network focusing on prison arts education. Issues of special concern related to the context, support, strategies and practice of delivering arts education for adult offenders and ex-offenders in a European context. City College Manchester, a further education college with a remit to support prison education in the UK, agreed to coordinate the network.
