International Airport Of Central Greece ( _el. Διεθνής Αερολιμένας Κεντρικής Ελλαδος, "Diethnís Aeroliménas Kentrikis Ellados") known as "Nea Anchialos" or "Volos", ( _el. "Νεα Ανχιαλος") airport codes|VOL|LGBL, which began operation on February 1991, is the only civilian airport that serves the city of Volos, Lamia, Larisa, Trikala, Karditsa.

General information

The airport is located between the towns of Almyros, Nea Anchialos, Velestino and Farsala, about 20 km to the west of central Volos (26 km by road, due to intervening hills)in Magnesia Prefecture of Thessaly. The airport is named after Nea Anchialos, the nearest town.

The airport currently has one terminal, with one main runway approximately 3 kilometres in length. The airport is developed by public partnership.

The airport is designed to be upgraded over the ensuing years in order to accommodate the increase in air travel and its upgades are planned in a six-phase framework.

A rail station immediately adjacent to the airport terminal (and accessible by an elevated walkway) will be completed in 2008. The airport is also accessible by the E75 highway. [ [http://www.hcaa-eleng.gr/greekair.htm Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority: Greek Airports] ]
