Principle of corresponding states

The principle (law) of corresponding states can, most generally, be summarized as "unity in diversity." For all gases, the compressibility factor is approximately the same at the same reduced pressure and temperature. [cite book|author=Çengel Y.A., Boles M.A.|title=Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach|edition=Sixth Edition|publisher=McGraw Hill|year= 2007|id=ISBN 978-0007-125771-8 page 141] Material constants that vary for each type of material are eliminated, in a recast reduced form of a constitutive equation. The reduced variables are defined in terms of critical variables.

The most prominent example is the van der Waals equation of state, the reduced form of which applies to "all" gases/fluids.
