"The Coffee Trader" is a novel by David Liss set in 17th century Amsterdam. The story revolves around Miguel Lienzo, a Portuguese Jew who is a refugee from the Portuguese Inquisition. Recovering from financial ruin for the Amsterdam commodities exchange, he embarks on a trade scheme with a gentile involving importing coffee (a new import to Europe), puts, and navigating the social structures of the Amsterdam business world, politics of the local Jewish Council, and the plots and greed of competitors.
