Sydney Ann Hay

Sydney Ann Hay is a Republican candidate for the United States House of Representatives.

Born in Colorado, she was a school teacher by profession. After teaching in Kansas, she moved to Arizona in 1979. After becoming a mother, she left teaching to become a homemaker, but shortly afterwards, she started a fitness business, which she ran part-time out of her home [http://nationalcharterschools.org/staff_detail.php?id=27] . During the early 1980s, she also became interested in public policy, initially out of strong admiration for Presidenet Ronald Reagan. She became a political organizer and later started her own small consultant and management firm. She focused increasing attention to land-rights issues, and in 1994, became Executive Director of Arizona Mining and Industry Get Our Support (aka AMIGOS), a trade association representing several copper mining interests

In 2002, she announced that she would run for the United States House of Representatives in District 1, covering roughly the northwestern portion of the state, which had no incumbent at the time. She was defeated in the Republican primary by wealthy businessman Rick Renzi, who went on to win the general election. That loss didn't dampen her enthusiasm for conservative policies, and she proceeded to guest host several radio talk shows, as well as authoring some newspaper editorials. This kept her in the public eye, and in 2005, she became president of the Arizona Mining Association [http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/business/articles/0425incharge25.html] .

In 2007, Renzi announced that he would not seek reelection, and Hay quickly announced that she would be a candidate again [http://milwaukee.bizjournals.com/phoenix/stories/2007/08/27/daily47.html] . She has been endorsed by the Republican National Coalition for Life, Eagle Forum, the Susan B. Anthony List, the National Conservative Campaign Fund, Gun Owners of America, the American Conservative Union, Arizona Right to Life, Senator Jon Kyl, Congressmen Trent Franks, John Shadegg, Jeff Flake, Duncan Hunter, Chris Cannon and former Congressman Barry Goldwater, Jr..
