Skortsinos

Skortsinos (Greek: Σκορτσινός) also with the second a accented. is a Greek village in the westcentral part of the Arcadia prefecture. Agriakona had a 2001 population of 83 for the village. Agriakona is also connected with the road linking the GR-7/E65 (Corinth - Tripoli - Kalamata) 10 km north along with the superhighway and Skortsinos.

Distances

Skortsinos is located about 30 km west of Tripoli, about 25 km east-southeast of Megalopoli and about 20 km south-southeast of Asea.

Geography

Skortsinos is situated in a valley area and has a larger valley that stretches outside Skortsinos, in the area, it is mainly in the northwest. The mountains dominate the area and it contains plenty of valleys and streams and grasslands along with barren lands to the north and less to the southwest, the mountain named Tsiberou is to the north. Farmlands are within the village area and the mountains are also around the area.

Population

History

The village used to have a large population before the beginning of the 20th century. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, the population began to decline as residents moved to larger towns and cities and outside of Greece. The fire that came from Voutsaras and Leontari and ravaged Skortsinos in the evening hours on Sunday August 26, 2007 and burnt several forests, houses and some farlmands, residents were shattered and also battled the blaze along weth firefighters, choppers and airplanes. Windspeeds were high and temperatures were around 40°C at the time. The blaze arrived into Agriakona the next day and slowly advanced into those areas.

Information

Its main industry are agriculture. Its main production are olives, citrus, fruits, vegetables and other crops, several common crops are rarely common.

Agriakona has several rural roads and approximately 6 km of hydro lines and roads, it also has approximately 8 to 10 km of rural roads.

Its residential houses and buildings are within the main road and it is about 200 to 300 m long wide at the centre. Much of the houses were stone built until the 1970s. Electricity arrived in the same year. Vehicles arrived in the 1970s, the pavement of the main road and television arrived in the 1980s and computer and internet are rarely known in the beginning of the 21st century and up to date technology are not seen.

The village offers panoramic views of Tsiberou to the north and mountains to the southeast, the south and the northwest.

Other

Skortsinos has a school, a church, and a square ("plateia"), its nearest lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) are in Leontari.
