Before it it gave its name to a golf course, querencia was a metaphysical concept. Spanish, querencia describes a place where one feels safe, a place from which one's strength of character is drawn, a place where one feels at home. It comes from the verb quere, which means to desire, to want.
In bullfighting, the bullfighter prepares for the kill that will end it. But a bull may stake out turf -- querencia -- a place in the ring where he feels strong and safe, even in the midst of a huge and looming assemblage of human beings who have gathered to behold the spectacle of a fight and death.
