Shahid Aziz Siddiqi

Nawabzada Shahid Aziz Siddiqi (born January 26, 1945, Lucknow, India) is a former senior Government official in Pakistan and Vice Chancellor of the Ziauddin Medical University. In June 2008 he was appointed Chairman of the Pakistan State Life Insurance Corporation.

Education

Siddiqi was educated at the Pakistan Air Force Military Academy in Sargodha and received a Bachelors degree from F.C College Lahore, a Masters from the University of Karachi and further at Wolfson College, Cambridge University.

In 1968, after a stint as a recon pilot in the Pakistan Air Force and a year as a Management Trainee for the Pakistan Tobacco Company, Siddiqi sat his Central Superior Services of Pakistan (C.S.S) examinations for the elite Pakistan Civil Services and topped the examination in West as well East Pakistan ("what is now Bangladesh")joining the "District Management Group".

Government career

In 1982, Siddiqi began serving as a Minister Hajj in Saudi Arabia, where he was appointed Commissioner of Karachi. He then served in several roles, including Managing Director of the Rice Export Committee of Pakistan [http://www.pasc.gov.pk/nmc_56.htm] , Director General Ports and Shipping, and ultimately Federal Secretary Communications and Chairman National Highway Authority in 1997. He worked with Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, a relationship he characterized as both close and courteous in his tribute to her after her death [ [http://www.thenews.com.pk/print1.asp?id=98256 Benazir – some memories ] ] .

Bhutto and two-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had a contentious and divisive struggle for Pakistan's power, which affected the careers and lives of hundreds of lesser ministers [ [http://www.newyorker.com/archive/1993/10/04/1993_10_04_082_TNY_CARDS_000365108?currentPage=all Profiles: BHUTTO'S FATEFUL MOMENT: The New Yorker ] ] . After his ascension, Sharif relegated Siddiqi to a lesser position. Press articles at the time, including Ardeshir Cowasjee (Dawn, January 18th 1998) and Kunwar Idrees (The News, October 7th 2000), called for a reversal of Siddiqi's fortune. It was not forthcoming. After leaving government service, Siddiqi refused a government pension. Post-Government Career
