Jules Michel

It was at the tender age of eight, while exploring the family attic that young Jules Michel first encountered his passion for painting. It came with the discovery of an old oil paint box and with it, he quickly improvised his first paintings.

An audacious and reckless youth, filled with enthusiasm and a healthy team spirit, Jules became the top champion roller skate speed skater in Paris at the age of fourteen. But he was also greatly impressed by the delicacy and extraordinarily precise work of his uncle, engraver Raymond Courcaut. As a result, Jules became a student of advertising while starting to compete in cycling races and continuing to paint in secret.

It was just after World War II, during the well-known Saint Germain-des-Prés period, that Jules met such influential thinkers as Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Boris Vian all against a backdrop of music by the yet unknown Juliette Gréco, and Sydney Bechet and Claude Lutter on their way to fame by way of the latest infusion and fusions of jazz.

Embracing a career in advertising, Jules moved up the agency ladder quickly and steadily, and at each step, found a new opportunity for creativity. But never forgot his first love.

Jules Michel never stopped painting and sculpting but was too individualistic, too full of energy to follow any long academic studies. Instead, he roamed Le Louvre, learned from his artist friends and periodically attended a variety of art schools including: Ecole des Arts Appliqués et des Arts Décoratifs, Les Beaux Arts and La Grande Chaumière where he was temporally interested in Cubism.Some of Jules Michel’s art collectors:
