West Bear Creek

West Bear Creek

West Bear Creek is a small tributary to Bear Creek located in Eastern North Carolina. The West Bear Creek watershed is a tiny contributing area of the Neuse River Basin.

The geology of the area is mostly siliclastic sediments and organic soils, deep groundwater is feed to the creek by the Black Creek aquifer. Land use in the area is mostly agriculture, although a United States Air Force Base (Seymour Johnson) and two low populated communities (Goldsboro and La Grange) are located with in a few miles (~10-15) of the creek.

Because of the surrounding land use land cover West Bear Creek expericenes large nitrate fluxes, resulting in poor water quality. However, research performed on the creek shows that riparian zone buffers and the nitrate reducing qualites of the hyporheic zone remove these large amounts of nitrate from West Bear Creek. Further work will shed light on indepth details of this creek's hydrology.
