Alan remained a devout Catholic throughout his life, including when he was mayor - the chauffeur would often wait outside Church for Alan and Alma to take them to ceremonial events.

Alan had itchy feet after leaving school, having no fewer than 20 occupations before settling at Rolls-Royce for 35 years, in computing, training, and eventually as a community relations manager.

Alan died on the morning of Saturday 10 February 2007, at Derby Royal Infirmary, having been suffering from a lung condition emphysema.

Alan Mullarkey's funeral was held on February 22 2007 at St George's Church in Normanton. The church was packed and even ran out of programmes. Various councilors past and present attended, including Derby North Member of Parliament Bob Laxton, councilor John Ahern, former mayors Janet Till and Abdul Rehman, Derby City Council leader Chris Williamson, and deputy leader Dave Roberts.
