2007 , the village has an estimatedpopulation of 2,045 and a density of 24.74 persons per km². The total area is 82.35 km².Tomari is situated on the western coast of the
Shakotan Peninsula along theSea of Japan . The village is known for fishing and seafood, includingsea urchin (uni),sea cucumber (namako) andsquid (ika).In addition, Tomari has always been linked with energy and power generation. Historically, the Kayanuma area of the village was a coal mining town. Recently, the village is famous for being the site of Hokkaidō's only
