Temagami First Nation

Temagami First Nation

Temagami First Nation is located on Bear Island, Lake Temagami, Ontario, Canada. It is home to a portion of the Aboriginal community, the Teme-Augama Anishnabai (the deep water people). The 1.8 square mile island is the largest in Lake Temagami, about 95 kilometers north of North Bay, Ontario. It represents only a small portion of the Anishnabe's n'Daki Menan (homeland), which includes ten thousand square kilometers of land in the area.

Maple Mountain in Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park was a sacred site of the Temagami First Nation. They called the mountain "Chee-bay-jing", meaning "the place where the spirits go". It was the most powerful in their realm.
