Highland Hall Waldorf School is a private school in Northridge, California with a curriculum based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and Waldorf Education. [ [http://www.highlandhall.org/ School website] ] Offering classes from grades Pre-K through 12, it is recognized the oldest Waldorf school on the West Coast. Highland Hall is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the Association of Waldorf Schools in North America (AWSNA). In June 2007, AWSNA had their annual conference on the HHWS campus. The school enrolls about 380 students. The campus, which lies on 11 acres of land in the San Fernando Valley, has a working garden, archery range and track.
History
Highland Hall Waldorf School was originally founded in 1955 in North Hollywood. In the early 1960s, Highland Hall outgrew their tiny sanctuary in North Hollywood and the administration decided to build a brand new campus on a hill in Northridge, California. This campus would have the capacity to house a nursery through 8th grade program, and eventually they expanded the school to accommodate the 9th through 12 grades. In 2005, Highland Hall celebrated its 50th anniversary. The College of Teachers, the original governing body of the school, disbanded in 2004 and the Leadership Team took over in its place. This team is comprised of five members of the faculty and the members of the team are occasionally shuffled from year to year.
Future
Highland Hall is moving forward with its plan to finally construct a gymnasium, a performing arts center, a new science lab, a new traffic circle, and all new classrooms for grades 1 through 8.
Sports
Sports programs begin in middle school for grade 6 through 8. Girl's volleyball, girl's and boy's basketball and baseball are all offered at the middle school level. High school sports include women's and men's basketball, men's baseball, women's softball, women's volleyball, golf and archery.
