Augusta Canal and Heritage Interpretive Center

The Augusta Canal is a man-made waterway in Augusta, Georgia, USA. It was built in 1845 as a source of water power for Augusta. Henry H. Cummingwho spearheaded the building of the Canal, as many thought Augusta could be a large manufacturing center.

There are three levels to the canal, the first level is convert|7|mi|km and is navigable. The second and third levels add approximately convert|3|mi|km but are not navigable. Many factories line the Canal, such as Enterprise Mill and Sibley Mill. When the American Civil War began, the Confederate government decided that Augusta's large source of power would be helpful. The Confederate States of America constructed 28 Powederworkclarifyme structures along two miles of the Canal. These were the only buildings constructed by the Confederate government. Today the Canal is a power source for the newly renovated Enterprise Mill. The Augusta Canal Interpretive Center is an interactive museum which details the history of the mills along the canal, and offers boat tours of the Canal.
