County Durham ,England . It is situated a few miles to the west ofDarlington .The village has seen many a change in the past 25 years, A folk myth states that the bypass next to Winston was built due to a tragic accident occurring in the middle of the village, which involved a war generals daughter dying in a car accident. The local Bridgewater Arms Pub at the bottom of the village was once a school.
The local river is also a great attraction, seeing people from miles around going to see it, as well as Rabbit Hill, which unfortunately two years ago saw one man break his back. The bridge also once held claim to being the biggest single stone arch bridge in Europe and has been featured in a French movie.It was featured in an english film,'A piece of Cake' when a Spitfire flew under it.Winston was the birthplace os Aaron Arrowsmith, the 'Father of modern Geagraphy' He was born atBarforth, son of John Arrowsmith, a prosperous farmer, and Mary Arrowsmith in 1705. When he was five years old his father died and his mother married a drunkard, who squandered the patrimony. Unable to afford an education, he was daught the rudiments if Mathematics br William Emmerson of Hurworth. When he was 21 he went to Soho, and commenced work for Cary the Cartographer, before becoming a Cartographer in his own right. His sons and nephew followed him into the business.
