Yuma Flats (New Mexico) is a fictional military base in "The Hills Have Eyes" film franchise. Yuma Flats had been the testing ground for A-Bombs from 1945 to 1962. 331 nuclear tests were conducted at the site. [imdb title|id=0454841|title=The Hills Have Eyes] The name is an obvious reference to Yucca Flat, a section of the Nevada Test Site where the United States carried out hundreds of real-world nuclear tests during the same time period.

First known to be an A-Bomb Testing Ground. Yuma Flats is now a U.S. Army Training and Testing Facility, and the home of Hades clan and Jupiter clan. Following the attacks on the Carter family, in which the Jupiter clan was wiped out, the area was subjected to US Army search and destroy missions that left the area almost devoid of life. The surviving members of the Hades clan murdered a group of scientists studying the area and later battled a group of National Guard trainees, where Hades attempted to breed with the female members of the squad in an effort to repopulate the clan. While the soldiers took most casualties, the entire clan, including Hades himself, were killed.

A deformed family known as the Hade's Clan were living the base. The clan's leader, Hades, who was the son of Karen Sawney Bean, was descended from Scottish serial killer Sawney Bean. Hades is said to be born during the 1950s due to the A-Bombs tested during the decade. He was born mutated. The birthplace of the mutated families is the Nuclear Testing Village, a town of plastic dummies and normal environment.

"Sector 16" is the place in which "The Carter family" were crossing travelling to San Diego, California, by dawn the next day half of the family were slaughtered by Jupiter's clan. Its presence is still not acknowledged to exist anymore. It depicted that the government destroyed the base so they can successfully hide its existence. There was only one mutant breathing in the base. After the aftermath of the Carter family, the Army was ordered to destroy Sector 16. The area has now never been used after its demolition after the aftermath of the scientists and the trainees.clarifyme The base expands about 1,300 square miles as said by the sergeant in "The Hills Have Eyes 2".

The Mines of Yuma Flats

"The Mines of Yuma Flats" were the home of both the Hades and Jupiters clan. The US Army was sent to the Nuclear Testing Village to make a deal with the inhabitants to leave the town telling them that the government will be conducting a number of nuclear tests in the vicinity. In the beginning of the nuclear tests, the families hid in the mines, which they had dug previously. From 1945 to 1962, the US Government had conducted a total of 331 nuclear tests in the area. The miners and their families having been exposed to radiation from the numerous tests, began to deform. Angered with the world and with no-where else to go, the now-mutants became a violent, and cannibalistic hill-dwelling people, killing anyone who passed through their mountains (Sector 16).

After Jupiter's Clan was slain by the Carter family, the mines where then owned by the Hades Clan. In the first film, it was revealed that the mines were owned by the United States Department of Energy. Shown in "The Hills Have Eyes 2" that the mutants use the mines to hide and kill people by coming in and out.

Nuclear Testing Village

The Nuclear Testing Village is a village where the US Government mainly placed the nuclear tests. The government wanted to know the genetic effects to modern-day life by placing a number of homes, plastic people, televisions, sofas, windows, and many other furniture. In "The Hills Have Eyes (2006)" the sign of the village is seen when Doug Bukowski enters with the dog and shotgun. It is said that Big Mama, Big Brain, Cyst and Jupiter mainly reside in the village.
