Taxonomy

The Greater Antillean Oriole was formerly included with Black-cowled Oriole but was split in 1999. [ Lanyon, S.M.; & Omland, K.E. (1999). "A molecular phylogeny of the blackbirds (Icteridae): five lineages revealed by cytochrome-b sequence data". "Auk" 116(3): 629-639.] It now consists of four subspecies distributed in the West Indies, one of which is a Cuban endemic and was previously treated as a distinct species, the Cuban Oriole. The nominate subspecies has also been known as the Hispaniolan Oriole.
