Toblerone model of social representations

Toblerone model of social representations

The toblerone model of social representations was developed by Martin Bauer and George Gaskell. It involves a representational triad of two subjects (S1, S2) concerned with an object (O), to which a time dimension is added denoting an espoused project (P) linking the two subjects and the object. Within this project, the common-sense meaning of the object is an emergent property. The basic unit of analysis (S-O-P-S) is depicted as a toblerone to capture the triangular relations as a time-gestalt of inter-objectivity. The model explains how in the object, the project of the subjects is represented; how in the subjects, the project appears in relation to a project; and how the project links both subjects and the object
