The Student Council ("Seitokai") Saga

Disc 1

*1. "The Rose Bride" *1. "The Rose Bride" Eight-year-old, orphaned Utena is rescued from her sadness by a mysterious prince who gives her a Rose Signet ring. He promises that the Ring will lead her to him again someday if she never loses her inherent nobility. Utena is so inspired by the unnamed prince that she decides to become like a prince herself. Six years later, 14-year-old Utena attends Ohtori Academy, and her noble aspirations lead her to accidentally enter the Dueling Game where she winds up engaged to the cryptic Rose Bride Anthy.
*2. "For Whom the Rose Smiles" Anthy moves in with Utena, much to the latter's chagrin. Utena cannot bear the thought of participating in a "game" where students fight for control over a fellow classmate's life and resolves to lose on purpose, but an encounter with Anthy's former Master causes her to question her decision.
*3. "On the Night of the Ball" Utena tries to convince Anthy to make more friends, and fights off Student Council President Touga's romantic advances. Utena and Anthy ultimately decide to go to the school's masked ball, but Touga's little sister Nanami has a trap for them there.
*4. "The Sunlit Garden - Prelude" Miki, a 7th-grade genius who suffers from shyness, alienation, and a traumatic past with his enstranged twin sister, falls in love with Anthy because he unconsciouslly connects her to the calm and innocent past that he lost. He and Nanami go to visit Anthy and Utena.
*5. "The Sunlit Garden - Finale" Miki avidly denies wanting to duel for control over Anthy's life, but subtle manipulation from Touga and another surprising player makes him greatly fearful for the traits he loves in Anthy.
*6. "Nanami, Beware!" Nanami is sure that someone is trying to kill her.
*7. "Juri's Unfulfillment" Despite being the Head of Fencing Team and a Student Council member with one of the strongest and most feared and admired personalities in the school, Juri has become a very cynical and bitter person with little feeling of self-worth left. She resents Anthy and greatly denies the power of miracles. Utena's idealism comes in conflict with her still raw wounds.

Disc 2

*8. "The Great Curry High Trip" A mishap in home economics causes Utena and Anthy to switch bodies. In the Rose Bride's body, Utena fights off Anthy's bullies and Saionji's advances while Nanami goes on a long journey to find a cure.
*9. "The Castle Said to Hold Eternity" A back-story depicting the origin's of Saionji's controlling, depressed personality also reveals the dark nature of Utena's childhood. The End of the World and a surprising accomplice take advantage of his deep-seated issues to set up their own agendas.
*10. "Nanami's Precious One" Nanami's desires and problems are the simplest and least impressive of all the Duelist, and yet to her, they are no less real. As Utena suffers over her inability to defend herself last episode, Touga's intentions become more sinister and Nanami is chosen by the Ends of the World to duel with Utena.
*11. "Graceful and Ruthless; the One Who Picks the Flower" Touga plays upon Utena's dreams of her prince and her newfound insecurity in order to win a Duel against her and take the Rose Bride.
*12. "For Friendship, Perhaps" Shattered over the loss of the Duel and Anthy, Utena goes to school just like a girl and falls into deep depression. When Wakaba persuades Utena to get back on her feet, she challenges Touga to a rematch and a surprising reaction from Anthy leads to the Duel's strange outcome.
*13. "Tracing A Path" Two men review Utena's duels, and the motivations of all the Duelists.

The Black Rose Saga

Disc 3

*14. "The Boys of the Black Rose" This episode introduces Anthy's brother, Akio, and Nemuro Hall, where students go to be interviewed then go duel. Utena duels Kanae.
*15. "The Landscape Framed by Kozue" Utena duels Kozue.
*16. "Cowbell of Happiness" Nanami receives the gift of golden cowbell, which she begins to wear everywhere. She turns into a cow, then receives a nose ring, a picture of which is never shown.
*17. "Thorns of Death" Utena duels Shiori.

Disc 4

*18. "Mitsuru's Growing Pains" Mitsuru, eager to become an adult, duels Utena.
*19. "The Song of the Fallen Kingdom" Wakaba introduces the Onion Prince.
*20. "Wakaba Flourishing" Saionji is expelled from school, and he lives in Wakaba's apartment for a while. Utena has another duel.

Disc 5

*21. "Troublesome Insects" Turns out the three of Nanami's lackeys have crushes on Touga. One of them, Keiko, duels Utena.
*22. "Nemuro Memorial Hall" A flashback explains the significance of Professor Nemuro and the one hundred students who died.
*23. "Qualifications of a Duelist" Utena and Mikage finally duel, with unexpected results.

The Akio Ohtori Saga

Disc 6

*24. "The Secret Nanami Diary" Tsuwakubi's secret diary is discovered. It chronicles some recent events in Nanami's life and lists at least 24 of Tsuwakubi's plans to win Nanami's heart.
*25. "Their Eternal Apocalypse" Akio insists that Anthy and Utena move into his residence. Saionji once again duels Utena claiming to know "The world as it is" Cue the appearance of the Prince's Sword.
*26. "Miki's Nest Box (The Sunlit Garden /Arranged)" Miki, taking a ride with Akio and his own sister, duels Utena.

Disc 7

*27. "Nanami's Egg" Nanami comes to think she has laid an egg.
*28. "Whispers in the Dark" Ruka comes back after an illness and duels with Utena.
*29. "Azure Paler Than the Sky" Juri duels Utena again.
*30. "The Barefoot Girl" Akio hits on Utena.

Disc 8

*31. "Her Tragedy" Nanami steals Touga's cell phone and learns that Touga's blood type is A, not B like the rest of the family, leading her to believe they are not related by blood.
*32. "The Romance of the Dancing Girls" Still angry over the revelation, Nanami duels Utena.
*33. "The Prince Who Runs Through the Night" Akio plays on a Radio Show, A clip show.

The Apocalypse Saga

Disc 9

*34. "The Rose Signet" The shadow girls put on a play, "The Tale of the Rose".
*35. "The Love That Blossomed in Wintertime" Utena tries hard to remember something important.
*36. "And the Doors of Night Open" Touga duels Utena and loses. Utena finds out the truth about Akio and Anthy.

Disc 10

*37. "The One to Revolutionize the World" Utena at length decides to duel for the power to revolutionize the world, with "true friendship" as motive.
*38. "The Ends of the World" Akio reveals that the dueling arena is a projection.
*39. "Someday we will Shine Together" Ultimately, Utena is unable to save Anthy before Utena disappears in the Million Swords of Hate. Back at Ohtori, Anthy pledges to find her, leaving the school and the duels behind, much to Akio's dismay.
